Al-Anba newspaper reported that the Orthopaedic Department at Farwaniya Hospital hosted the German foot and ankle pioneer Dr Manfred Thomas, president of the foot and ankle surgery society in Europe, in cooperation with the department's medical team. The department head, Dr Mohammad Eid, described the visit.
A busy visit
During the visit Dr Thomas examined 150 patients in the outpatient clinics and performed 14 different operations, including correction of foot and ankle deformities. The work also included foot and ankle arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) for sports injuries and operations on children's feet and ankles. A treatment plan was set for each patient.
Follow-up and teaching
The visiting surgeon is due to return in September to follow up the patients and operate on further cases. He also trained the department's doctors and held a workshop for them.
Why visits matter
Dr Eid stressed that visits by guest doctors are among the important ways to shorten waiting lists and reduce the need for treatment abroad, since citizens and patients can meet world-class surgeons with wide experience in Kuwait's hospitals. He added that such visits bring international experience and new skills to the orthopaedic surgeons at Farwaniya Hospital and make the department one of the distinguished centres in the region across all the fine subspecialties, such as foot and ankle surgery, joint surgery, spine surgery and children's orthopaedics.
More visitors planned
The department will soon host more doctors from all orthopaedic subspecialties. Patients are invited to register through the department or through the "Sahel" app.
