First robotic knee replacement at Farwaniya Hospital

Al-Anba newspaper reported that the Orthopaedic Department at Farwaniya Hospital has entered a new stage, with the arrival of a robotic device and its first knee replacement carried out using computer navigation. Dr Mohammad Eid, head of the department, said the service now offers care at the level of leading orthopaedic departments in Canadian universities.

What was done

The first operation was supervised by Dr Majed Shaheen, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon trained in leading Canadian universities, who recently joined the department's team. He is passing his experience on to Kuwaiti surgeons for operations of this kind, which also spares patients the hardship of travelling abroad for treatment.

How the robot helps

The robotic device measures the joint and calculates how it should be replaced, with the aim of reducing the margin of error. It is also used in cases of severe deformity with advanced osteoarthritis.

Open to patients across Kuwait

Dr Eid confirmed that the department now receives all joint replacement cases using the robot, from every region of Kuwait, so that patients can get this specialised service within the country.

Thanks and support

The department thanked the Minister of Health, Dr Ahmed Al-Awadhi, the Undersecretary, Dr Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, the director of Farwaniya Health Region, Dr Mohammad Al-Rashidi, the hospital director, Dr Ali Al-Mutairi, the head of the hospital medical authority, Dr Ahmed Al-Dousari, and the head of the orthopaedic departments council, Dr Oweid Al-Mutairi, for their support in removing every obstacle to offering patients the best healthcare.
